Producer and performing artist King Tozua has shared a candid account of his bitter experiences regarding two major hit songs he produced: ‘Christy’ by the duo Double and ‘Seke’ by Dr Slim.
He also disclosed the circumstances that led to Double’s split.
He revealed that despite both tracks being massive successes, he failed to receive any financial returns.
Tozua described the situation with ‘Christy’ as a profoundly unfortunate moment in his music career, especially given the significant financial investment he poured into the song’s production.
“This is the first time I am talking about this. ‘Christy’ made waves, but I did not make any returns from the song. I spent a substantial amount of money, but when the song became a hit and it was time for me to recoup my investment, Double went their separate ways.”
He noted that ‘Christy’ was the breakthrough track that generated numerous performance opportunities for the duo, yet they were unable to maintain the group’s unity.
When questioned about the cause of the split, which involved members Paa Kwesi and Nana Yaw, King Tozua characterized the musicians as having fundamentally different temperaments.
He described Paa Kwesi as the one who “applied wisdom” and deliberate thought to his actions, while Nana Yaw was “quick-tempered” and acted impulsively, making sound judgment on group matters difficult.
King Tozua ultimately disclosed that the group’s demise stemmed from a conflict involving a woman.
He recounted that Paa Kwesi had confided in him, alleging that the woman claimed Nana Yaw had tried to use a spiritualist to cast a spell on him.
Subsequently, a furious Nana Yaw also called Tozua, bitterly complaining that Paa Kwesi had sent him to a ‘juju man’ (spiritualist). To address the escalating issue, the woman was brought in for a meeting with both members present, but she was reportedly unable to substantiate her claims.
In response to whether the two men dated or had an affair with the woman in question (whose name he withheld), he neither confirmed nor denied the relationship.
The ‘Seke’ Controversy
The producer also revealed that the success of ‘Seke’ followed a similar, disappointing trajectory regarding his financial compensation. He indicated that the production of ‘Seke’ was surrounded by significant controversy.
Speaking to Danny Fii Abrantie on the Away Bus show on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Tozua explained that Nana Yaw (from the group Double) initially appealed to him to assist Dr Slim, whom he recognized as a talented musician.
Tozua financed and produced the song, and upon its release, it garnered massive support from both traditional and event DJs. He naturally expected that Dr Slim and his team would show appreciation for this effort and success.
“Seke was a massive hit back then. I got massive support from DJs, including street DJs… The DJs confronted me, stating the song had been a success and so it was time I appreciated their efforts. But could you believe that by the time I realized, Dr Slim and his uncle had gone to sign with Empire Records? I was the one who financed and produced the song, but they later signed with a different records.”
He expressed deep disappointment, stating that not only did he not make any returns from the song, but the secrecy surrounding the signing was also disheartening. He concluded that he would have simply appreciated it if they had informed him of their intentions beforehand.
