The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had described the attack launched on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and journalists by illegal miners.
A statement issued by the Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, indicated that it was shocking that the EPA boss Professor Ama Klutse and her team had to run for their lives because the soldiers who accompanied them could not face the armed illegal miners.
He asked President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency as part of efforts to fight illegal mining.
“Mr. President, this development is not only frightening but has set a new height of audacity and impunity by the galamsey cartels.”
He stated that the current situation requires a radical approach in dealing with the galamsey.
“The current situation calls for a radical response. We recently lost eight gallant men, which sent the entire country into a state of mourning, leaving families broken and grief-stricken, Mr. President. The threat to national security cannot be overemphasized; this is how guerrilla wars begin, with many examples around the world, such as the armed groups around the Rivers state in Nigeria, which is oil-related. Therefore, this matter cannot be swept under the carpet and treated as business as usual. The consequences are too dire.”
He further proposed to the President to sack any Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) with illegal mining going on in their respective areas.
“Furthermore, Mr. President, fire all MMDCEs in areas where galamsey is ongoing. Either they have failed or they are tacitly involved and have approval from top echelons. H.E. John Dramani Mahama, your MP for Assifu North disregarded your orders and led a group of thugs to attack the NAIMOS team that you have empowered to fight the menace. Luckily, the story would not have been a gory one, with all the videos from the incidents. Your authority is challenged, and the world waits to see your response.”
