The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has claimed that the removal process of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was a “travesty of justice.”
The Effutu lawmaker posited that the processes and recommendations for the removal of the head of the judiciary were carried out in a manner that breached constitutional procedures and undermined the principles of transparency and fairness.
“It is our [minority] contention that the removal of Torkornoo didn’t adhere to any constitutional procedure. Never should any Ghanaian suffer such a fate. The removal of Torkornoo was cloaked in unacceptably opaque circumstances.”
He made the assertions in his opening remarks on Monday, November 10, 2025, when the Chief Justice nominee Justice Baffoe-Bonnie appeared before the Appointments Committee to be vetted.
In his view, the removal of the former Chief Justice was a dangerous precedent for the country’s democratic and judicial integrity.
However, the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga opposed what he said, describing his remarks as unfortunate.
He indicated that the remarks breached the rules of the House and sought to defame and discredit the Committee that dealt with the petitions submitted for the removal of Madam Torkornoo.
“You can’t be allowed to run down everybody just because you are Afenyo-Markin. You will not attack anyone and walk away with it while I sit on this committee.”
