The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders, Nana Kwame Peprah, has urged the government to fulfill its promise to establish the Women’s Bank.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM ahead of the 2026 budget presentation, he noted that the government had pledged to establish this bank to address the challenges women face in accessing capital for business expansion.
He stated that GUTA is eagerly awaiting an update on the bank’s status. In the 2025 budget presentation, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the allocation of GH¢51.3 million as seed funding for the Women’s Development Bank to support women entrepreneurs and traders.
Kwame Peprah recalled that the Minister had stated the bank’s objective is to remove barriers such as collateral and equity requirements that have hindered women from securing funding from traditional banks.
He reminded the government that traders are looking forward to an update on when the bank will be established.
“One key issue we are looking forward to being captured in the budget is the Women’s Bank. The promise was that the bank would offer flexible financial solutions tailored to the needs of women in small and medium enterprises. We have not heard anything else about the bank. If executed, the bank and its services will certainly help our women expand their businesses.”
He added that other issues they want addressed include exchange rates, interest rates, import duties, and new tax reforms that will reduce taxes.
He commended the government for sustaining the cedi appreciation for almost a year but underscored the need for long-term sustainability.
