The Member of Parliament for the Agotime-Ziope Constituency, Hon. Charles Akwasi Agbeve, has called on the government to adopt a more strategic approach to financial planning, emphasising the need to address pressing health concerns, including vaccine procurement and emergency response.
Speaking on the sidelines of the upcoming budget presentation, Member of the Health Committee and Chairman of the National Vaccine Institute, Hon. Agbeve, suggested that the government focus on optimising tax collection and leveraging COVID-19 funds to support vaccine procurement.
“We should utilise COVID-19 funds for vaccine procurement or create a National Emergency Health Fund,” he said. “We need to prioritise our spending and ensure that we are making the most of our resources.”
Agbeve’s recommendations also include increasing the allocation of the national budget to rural areas, providing more funding for rural development, and sustaining macroeconomic indicators, including low inflation, a stable exchange regime, and reduced interest rates.
“We need to ensure that our resources are being utilised effectively to address the pressing needs of our people,” Agbeve emphasised. “This includes investing in our health sector, improving our infrastructure, and creating economic opportunities for our youth.”
The MP’s call for increased funding for rural development comes as many Ghanaians eagerly await the upcoming budget presentation, hoping for measures that will stimulate economic growth and improve their livelihoods.
“We are optimistic that the government will take a more strategic approach to addressing our developmental challenges,” Agbeve said. “We need to work together to build a more prosperous and equitable society for all Ghanaians.
