The immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Paul Kwabena Boafo, has stressed the critical need for the Church in Ghana to establish a united front and a single, authoritative voice to speak out against societal ills.
Speaking at the closing, thanksgiving, and awards ceremony of the Christian Council of Ghana’s maiden Ecumenical Convention, held from November 14 to 17, 2025, he urged the Church to remain strong and actively avoid divisions that could compromise the body of Christ.
The sermon was delivered on the theme “Uniting the Body of Christ for Greater Impact”.
The convention itself served as a strategic platform to strengthen relationships among Christian denominations in Ghana and the diaspora, aiming to pursue a collective impact on national issues.
In his address, the respected man of God asserted that the Christian community must unite in one voice to speak forcefully against corruption, environmental degradation, and all other forms of evil that undermine the peace, stability, security, and safety of the country. He specifically noted that local councils of churches should collaborate to address evil within their operating localities.
Most Rev. Paul Kwabena Boafo insisted that the Church must regain its moral authority and establish a unified prophetic voice to hold political leaders accountable, rather than engaging in competition among its various denominations. He described competition for influence as “unhealthy” when the Church could instead unite to promote peace, good governance, environmental protection, and accountable leadership.
“The local council of churches at your level can come together and speak against evil in our society,” he stated. “You can come together and say no to ‘galamsey’ [illegal mining]. You can come together and say no to injustice, no to evil, and no to humiliation. We need to speak against the corruption in our society, and some of these corrupt people are within our churches. We need to speak against them; we must not shield them. That is how we can remain relevant and impactful in our society.”
“We need to speak up against environmental degradation in our society and demand the political transparency that we are all looking for.”
Most Rev. Paul Kwabena Boafo further highlighted that the Christian community has played a major role in maintaining Ghana’s current peace, stability, and safety. To sustain this crucial role, he emphasised the necessity of continued unity over fragmentation.
He added that the convention’s theme was highly appropriate, stating that while the various churches are diverse in their way of life, they all stand under the essential banner of Christ. As a majority Christian nation, he reminded the attendees that if they pursue a single purpose and agenda—that of disciplining the entire nation—they must remember that in unity, they can transform lives, uplift the nation, and maintain peace and stability in Ghana and beyond.
