President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Ghanaian Cedi has regained respect both locally and internationally.
He commended the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Ministry of Finance for their efforts in ensuring the stability of the Cedi.
Speaking at the Cedi@60 commemoration organized by the Bank of Ghana in Accra, under the theme “Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” President Mahama said**,** “I just want to say that the governor and all your team at the BoG, the Ministry of Finance, Ghanaians are grateful to you for the management of our currency,” he said.
He stated, “I think that a lot of respect has returned to our currency. And it’s my hope that you will keep whatever you are doing to make sure that we don’t have excess liquidity, all those words you people have; open market operations, whatever, those your technical jargons are’’.
He however admonished the central bank and finance officials to maintain their efforts: “Whatever you are doing, continue doing so, so that the cedi is respected,” he said.
On July 19, 2025, the Cedi will mark 60 years as Ghana’s sole legal tender.
The Cedi was issued to replace the Ghanaian Pound as the sole legal tender in Ghana on July 19, 1965.
Since then, the Cedi has remained a strong symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty and development.
