The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has opined that protecting the Ghana cedi is a collective national responsibility, not the mandate of a single institution.
Delivering a speech at an event to mark the Cedi@60 celebrations on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, Dr. Johnson Asiama said every Ghanaian has a role to play in strengthening confidence in the national currency and supporting the stability of the economy.
He asserted that protecting the Cedi goes beyond monetary policy and regulatory efforts, extending to the everyday actions and attitudes of citizens, businesses, and institutions.
“It is my hope that every Ghanaian—from the child learning to count, to the trader serving her community, to the entrepreneur building something new—can continue to hold the Cedi with unwavering confidence and pride.”
“May we always remember that protecting the Cedi is not the task of any one institution,” he said. “It is a shared endeavour—an endeavour rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future.”
He added that the BoG remains committed to policies that promote monetary stability, but noted that long-term confidence in the Cedi requires collective discipline, responsible economic behaviour, and national unity.
He further said that every generation holds its own memory of the national currency, making it important to consider how young Ghanaians will relate to the Cedi.
“Young Ghanaians are growing up in a world where value is moved instantly, where digital interaction is second nature, and where expectations of transparency and accountability continue to rise,” he noted.
“Part of our responsibility as policymakers, technicians, and leaders is to ensure that the Cedi—however it is accessed—continues to serve these aspirations,” he said.
