A Past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, who served from 2018 to 2024, has raised serious concerns over what he described as the fragmentation of the Church.
He observed that the various denominations are currently in competition with one another instead of maintaining unity within the body of Christ.
Most Rev. Dr. Boafo lamented that the Church today has lost its primary focus and has instead adopted a “market understanding and market mentality” of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
He stated that this situation has led to churches competing with each other, much like businesses do.
Delivering a sermon at the closing and awards ceremony of the maiden Ecumenical Convention, organized by the Christian Council on Sunday, November 16, 2025, he reiterated that the Church has adopted a market mentality instead of concentrating on preaching the Gospel of Christ.
”We compete for members, we compete for resources, we compete for visibility, we compete for influence, which is killing the unity, killing ecumenism, and killing the one purpose of God.”
Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo urged the Church to stand up and redefine itself to ensure it can undertake great works for a greater impact and maintain its relevance in Ghana.
He charged the Church to regain its moral and spiritual authority as the Church of God.
He asserted that the Ghanaian public requires a unified prophetic voice capable of speaking truth to power without fear of division.
The respected clergyman stressed that the Church must be a unified body and serve as the conscience of the nation, adding that the Church must speak out against injustice, illegal mining (galamsey), corruption, and abuse of power.
”That is the Gospel. That is the good news because we are one with one voice,” he emphasised.
He added that the Church, acting as a unified body, must demand integrity from society, exposing corrupt individuals and not shielding them, especially those within the Church.
He stressed that this is how the Church can become influential and impactful in the community.
The Convention was held under the theme
“Uniting the Body of Christ for Greater Impact”.
It was aimed at strengthening Christian unity across denominations within the country and the diaspora.
The convention brought together members of the five pioneering churches — Methodist Church Ghana, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Anglican Church, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church, alongside participants from other denominations, with the aim of fostering unity within the Christian community.
