Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, has been unanimously elected Chairman of the ECOWAS Caucus of the Africa Parliamentary Union (APU). As a human rights lawyer, he brings a wealth of experience to the role.
The election took place on Thursday, November 20, 2025, during a caucus meeting held alongside the 84th Session of the APU Executive Committee and ahead of the 47th Conference of African Parliamentarians in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
He succeeds Mali’s Alioune Gueye, who chaired the caucus for the past two years. Previously, the Ghanaian MP served as Vice Chairman earlier this year before his election to the top spot. Ghana’s delegation to the meetings was led by the Second Deputy Speaker and MP for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako. Other members included Bede Ziedeng,
Lawra-Nandom MP, Sammy Awuku, Akuapem North MP, John Oti Bless, Nkwanta North MP, and Shirley Kyei, Atwima Nwabiagya South MP. Prior to the election, the lawmaker addressed the APU Executive Committee, emphasizing the need for stronger continental collaboration on key issues such as youth unemployment, green economic transition, and the harmonization of national laws to support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He also reiterated his advocacy for the abolition of the death penalty, the criminalization of witchcraft accusations, particularly to protect vulnerable older women, and the full operationalization of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Furthermore, he pledged to pursue significant reforms within the ECOWAS Caucus over the next two years and expressed gratitude to fellow delegates for the confidence placed in his leadership.
