Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has disclosed that the government will collaborate with the private sector in healthcare infrastructure development.
Speaking during the 2026 budget statement debate, Akandoh revealed that the government will partner with private companies to provide equipment for hospitals through an ‘equipment placement’ arrangement.
He explained that the move is to ensure hospitals have the necessary equipment to provide quality healthcare services.
Mr. Akandoh stated that private sector participation is crucial in achieving Universal Health Coverage.
He indicated that the government remains committed to improving healthcare infrastructure, including constructing six new regional hospitals and completing ten Agenda 111 projects.
The Health Minister also mentioned the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as MahamaCares, which will provide sustainable financing for non-communicable disease treatment and specialised medical services.
Meanwhile, the Minister stated that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has seen significant improvements, with over 20 million people covered, aiming for 60% coverage.
He announced a 120% increase in NHIS tariffs from January 2026, making them more realistic and reducing co-payments.
The National Health Insurance Authority has disbursed 7.5 billion cedis as of September this year, boosting confidence in the scheme. According to him, measures are in place to address illegal payments charged by service providers and improve healthcare access.
