Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that Ghana is not included in the United States government’s latest Green Card review and temporary immigration suspension.
This disclosure followed a meeting on Monday, December 1, 2025, with Acting US Ambassador to Ghana Rolf Olson, who formally briefed the Minister that Ghana is not among the countries affected by the new measures announced by the US administration.
The discussions between Minister Ablakwa and Ambassador Olson went beyond clarification on the immigration issue, focusing on positive developments to strengthen Ghana-US ties.
The meeting successfully addressed the restoration of five-year visas for Ghanaian travelers and the withdrawal of the 15% tariffs that had been imposed on Ghanaian cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other qualifying agricultural products.
Furthermore, bilateral cooperation was enhanced with agreements on ongoing arrangements for Ghanaian supporters preparing for World Cup activities and enhanced security cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement.
The enhanced security includes increased intelligence exchanges and expanded training involving US military aviation assets, with all operations coordinated through appropriate Ghanaian authorities.
The Minister also affirmed Ghana’s commitment to continuing discussions under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), emphasising the government’s pursuit of agreements that secure the best outcomes for the country, including for the growth of Ghana tourism services.
