Security analyst Irbard Ibrahim has asserted that the suggestion for President John Dramani Mahama to nominate Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Ghana’s next Minister for Defence is entirely appropriate.
Mr. Ibrahim characterised her as possessing the composure, experience, and technical knowledge necessary to effectively manage the ministry.
The position became vacant following the tragic passing of Dr. Edward Plane Boamah, who, along with seven others, died in a helicopter crash on August 6.
During an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the analyst suggested that nominating the current lawmaker would serve as a fitting tribute and a way to preserve the legacy of her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry John Rawlings.
He noted the family’s deep-rooted history in the security sector, stating, “The parents of Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings and the family possess a historic background in security… Appointing her would be an honour and perpetuate the legacy of the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.”
Mr. Irbard Ibrahim further vouched for her qualifications, adding, “She was my colleague at the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre… She has the composure, she has the knowledge, her human relations are excellent, and she has the intellect to undertake this role.”
He did, however, caution against undue influence, appealing to the public to refrain from mounting pressure on the President regarding the appointment.
He argued that the perceived delay in the President’s nomination of a new Defence Minister should be understood.
He explained that since Dr. Boamah was a trusted and cherished figure to President Mahama, his sudden death has profoundly affected him, and the President should be accorded adequate time for the replacement process.
