Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound disappointment regarding the management of the Kpandai constituency seat.
Dr Bawumia characterised the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to proceed with a rerun of the constituency election, as directed by the High Court, as unfortunate and premature.
He said that the scheduling of the rerun is proceeding despite pending legal issues surrounding the matter, stating that it is ill-advised to organise the election when legal challenges have not been exhausted.
The aspiring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggested that the NPP candidate, Matthew Nyindam, who was initially declared the winner of the 2024 parliamentary election, is being railroaded.
Dr Bawumia pointed out that Mr Nyindam has filed an appeal challenging the High Court’s decision, with a further application pending before the Supreme Court. He alleged that the EC is displaying undue haste due to perceived pressure, possibly from the government.
He asserted that Mr Nyindam must be accorded due process to exhaust all pending legal avenues before the rerun can legitimately be conducted.
Speaking to journalists on the issue, Dr Bawumia stated, “I am very disappointed in what is going on in the country. It looks like our institutions of democracy and the tenets of democracy are being undermined.”
He drew parallels to previous high-profile electoral disputes, such as those involving Dan Abodakpi and Gyakye Quayson. “The House has typically allowed the courts and the legal processes to take place and be exhausted before state institutions are stampeded into acting in ways that undermine democracy,” he noted.
Dr Bawumia reiterated that Mr Nyindam “should be given his day in court. He has filed an appeal process; he has filed for a judicial review at the Supreme Court. None of those cases have been adjudicated, so why the rush? Why the indecent haste?”
The former vice president stressed the necessity to halt the ongoing processes for the rerun scheduled for December 30, 2025, to ensure that all legal cases are fully concluded.
He added that democracy is a precious commodity to which all have subscribed, and any attempt to undermine its pillars will cause it to fracture, resulting in severe consequences for the country.
Dr Bawumia cautioned that the possession of power does not warrant its abuse or the intimidation of political opponents.
He also expressed his support for the Minority Caucus, describing their recent actions regarding the matter as justified.
