Mahdi Gibril, Deputy Director of Elections for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphatically dismissed claims that a recent fatal bee attack on a party member in Kpandai was a spiritual reprisal linked to internal party disputes or an attempt to wrest the constituency seat.
Appearing on the Frontline program on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Gibril characterized the claims as “ridiculous,” suggesting they are being propagated purely for political advantage and to garner public sympathy.
Gibril also refuted suggestions that the attack occurred during an official NDC function. He clarified that the party was, in fact, organizing a large-scale training program with over 2,000 participants.
”If the bee attack had occurred there, it would have been a disaster,” he admitted.
He revealed that the unfortunate incident took place far from the training center. A party member, he explained, “had gone to the scene where the attack occurred, but his touch disturbed the bees, and they attacked him. It is an unfortunate incident because he died.”
Gibril expressed strong indignation that some individuals have connected the tragedy to a divine or spiritual attack aimed at punishing the NDC or preventing them from winning the seat from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
”The bee attack was far from where we organized the programme,” Gibril stated. “But for people to say that it was a spiritual attack from God opposing us and punishing us over the ongoing Kpandai issues is most unfortunate. That is an old political template that cannot win the NPP power. They should know better.”
He further recounted a similar incident in 2024 involving road accidents and casualties, challenging the analogy being used: “If we follow that logic, does it mean that God was against the NPP and those who died, as well as those who also died from the side of the NDC?”
Gibril stressed that attributing the death to spiritual warfare is baseless. “Some people have even said that some spirits within the NPP are the ones doing this. This is purely ridiculous and should not be entertained.”
He ended by drawing a parallel to a previous by-election, noting that in the Ablekuma North rerun, the NPP’s candidate had allegedly resorted to insults and curses, making the current rhetoric unsurprising.
