Greedy politicians pushing third-term bid for twice-defeated, first-term failure Mahama – MP

The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has strongly criticized individuals advocating for a third-term bid for President John Dramani Mahama, labeling them “greedy and selfish politicians.”

According to the lawmaker, President Mahama is one of the luckiest figures in Ghanaian politics.

He argued that despite what he described as an “abysmal” performance during his first term, Mahama has been given a rare opportunity by the electorate to return to the presidency.

Mr Acquah believes the President should ignore “reckless proposals” for an extension and instead prepare to step away gracefully once his second term concludes.

Speaking on the program As It Is in Ghana on Rainbow Radio (92.4FM UK and 87.5FM Ghana), the MP suggested there is a calculated attempt to leverage the NDC’s “super-majority” in Parliament to push this agenda.

He firmly refuted claims that a third term has the support of the general public.

“The Ghanaians I know believe that anyone advising President Mahama to pursue a third term is a greedy politician,” Acquah stated. “We saw how terrible his first term was. Ghanaians have reconsidered and brought you back to complete your two terms. However, you are already pushing for a third term before your second is even over.”

He further emphasised that such a move would be a direct violation of the Constitution of Ghana, warning that while the NDC may have the numbers in the House to attempt such a change, the citizens do not support it.

Beyond the term-limit debate, Acquah leveled heavy accusations against the current administration’s management of the country.

He claimed the government is underperforming and allegedly using “galamsey” (illegal mining) proceeds to manage the economy at the cost of destroying water bodies and forest reserves.

He alleged that government officials and their affiliates are directly involved in illegal mining activities.

He noted that current policies are crippling local industries by making imports unnaturally cheap, leaving local manufacturers struggling to survive.
