Emperor T-Jiga, a Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter, drummer, and music producer known for Afrobeat, Afropop, reggae, highlife, and world music, says there is no major difference in how Ghana and America approach music.
According to him, what Ghana does is basically the same thing done in the States, with the only difference being that music production, promotion, and related activities are far more advanced in America than in Ghana.
He, however, prefers to do his recordings in Ghana due to how producers understand the music and style.
Speaking on the Mid-Morning Drive on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said he prefers to do his recordings in Ghana compared to the United States because Ghanaian producers understand his style of music better than those in America.
He told host Eddie Ray that Ghanaian producers have a better understanding of African music, hence why he always comes home to produce.
“I prefer to do my recordings back here in Ghana because when I’m working with a Ghanaian producer, he understands the rudiments of Ghanaian music, the instruments, and the feel of African music better than someone outside Ghana.”
According to him, he comes home once a year to record his songs and then goes back to the States.
Theophilus Nii Martei Martey, known as Emperor T-Jiga, is a Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter and producer recognized for his work in various genres.
He founded the Akwaaba Ensemble and served as New Hampshire’s Artiste Laureate from 2022 to 2024.
Emperor T-Jiga has led over 5,000 music workshops and received a Ghana Music Award USA for Best International Collaboration in 2022.
