In a heartfelt social media statement, the president highlighted the strengthening of bilateral ties between Ghana and China during the ambassador’s tenure, noting that the relationship has evolved beyond traditional diplomacy into a genuine partnership.

The Ghanaian leader stressed several critical areas where Chinese cooperation has significantly impacted Ghana’s current economic and infrastructural landscape.

He extended specific thanks to Chinese President Xi Jinping for China’s pivotal role in negotiating Ghana’s debt restructuring, a move seen as essential for the country’s fiscal recovery.

President Mahama noted the recent announcement of two major development projects funded by Chinese grants including the $30 Million for the Aflao Market Project and the $30 Million for the construction of a new Science and Technology University in Damango.

“You haven’t just been an ambassador or diplomat; you have been a friend, and I’m sad to see you go,” President Mahama stated.

Under Ambassador Tong’s leadership, relations between the two nations have remained “excellent”, according to Mahama.

President Mahama credited the Ambassador for his tireless work in ensuring that China remains a significant partner in Ghana’s developmental journey.

Thank you, Ambassador Tong, for your work during the period you served as Chinese Ambassador to Ghana. You haven’t just been an ambassador or diplomat; you have been a friend, and I’m sad to see you go. Of course, our relations with China are excellent.

My appreciation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for China’s involvement in negotiating Ghana’s debt restructuring and for providing significant support for Ghana’s development. Of course we are also grateful for the $30m grant for the Aflao Market Project and another $30m for the construction of a new Science and Technology University in Damango.

Thank you, Ambassador Tong, for strengthening the existing relations between Ghana and China during his tenure.
