The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the governing party, has declared that all government appointees are required to relinquish their positions if they wish to contest for executive roles within the party.
General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey made this announcement at a press conference held on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
He emphasised that this directive is part of the party’s preparatory measures for its upcoming reorganisation, scheduled to commence on January 30.
Mr Kwetey further clarified that any government appointee aspiring to contest for a party position must resign at least six months prior to submitting their nomination forms.
“Any person contesting any position in the party who is holding an office to which he or she was appointed by the president or the government shall resign at least six (6) clear months from the said office or appointment prior to the filing of the nomination forms for the party position he or she desires to contest,” he said.
According to him, the restriction applies to a range of government appointees, including ministers, chief executives and local government heads, with the exception of board members.

“Persons who are affected by the restrictions specified in paragraph (1) of this section shall include the following:
(a) Ministers and Deputy Ministers;
(b) Chief Executive Officers or Managing Directors and Deputy Chief Executive Officers or Deputy Managing Directors, or analogous officers;
(c) Metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives of metropolitan, municipal and district administrative units of the government of Ghana, ”.
“A person appointed as a chairperson or member of any Board, or any analogous position shall be exempt from the restrictions imposed by paragraph (1) of this section,” he added.
