Germany-based Ghanaian Highlife musician Action Man Kofi has stressed the importance of preserving Highlife music, regardless of the growing popularity of other genres.
With nearly a decade of professional experience, the musician asserted that Highlife is Ghana’s cultural heritage and urged stakeholders to do everything possible to protect its legacy.
Speaking in an interview on the Mid-Morning Drive on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Eddie Ray, Action Man Kofi acknowledged that while it is positive for musicians to explore various genres, Highlife remains Ghana’s primary musical representation.
He suggested that while the curation of the genre can be modernised, it should never be erased from the Ghanaian music space.
He further noted that the industry is expansive enough to accommodate all musical styles without the need for artists to undermine one another.
“The new crop of musicians are doing their best, but whatever the situation, Highlife is our heritage. It is our culture and represents our social, economic, and moral life as a people. I will continue to advocate that we preserve Highlife. We can modernise, but we cannot erase it entirely. We can equally have other genres because the industry is big enough to contain all of us, but Highlife should be our best seller.”

Despite his optimism, the artist expressed concern regarding the lack of support for the industry, specifically for rising talents. He called for more financiers to invest in both emerging artists and established musicians who are currently struggling.
Action Man Kofi highlighted that the decline of dedicated executive producers has made it increasingly difficult for new entrants to break through.
“One of the major challenges in the industry is money. We need support. We have great musicians and new entrants who are struggling. We no longer have executive producers who are investing in musicians. It is a struggle, and that is a challenge for the incoming musicians. We will unearth more musicians if we get the support.”
