Africa must unite to drive shared prosperity – VP Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang

The Vice President of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has underscored the need for unity among African countries to strengthen integration.

This, she believes, will also drive shared prosperity and economic growth across the continent.

Ghana and Zambia revitalise the Permanent Joint Commission and sign 10 MoUs to boost sectoral cooperation.

She said this while speaking at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has therefore called on African leaders to develop long-term and medium-term policies, build strong development finance institutions, and implement regional projects that reflect the scale of collective continental ambitions.

A unified Africa would enable entrepreneurs and manufacturers to view the continent not as a series of fragmented markets, but as one connected economy with vast opportunities.

She further admonished African policymakers and business leaders to prioritise initiatives that strengthen cross-border collaboration and regional economic integration.

“We must continue to integrate our borders. Africa must unite. This is not about erasing sovereignty; it is about organising our sovereignty in service of shared prosperity and our market,” Ghana’s Vice President explained.

Meanwhile, he has also expressed concern about the low participation of African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in cross-border trade.

She argued that the continent’s economic transformation agenda cannot be fully realised without stronger support for SMEs, women and young entrepreneurs.

“Fewer than 20 percent of SMEs engage in export trade,” she stated, describing the situation as a major obstacle to Africa’s goal of building a single integrated economic space.

According to her, the continent’s future must be inclusive, cautioning that excluding young people, women and small enterprises would undermine long-term prosperity.

“A future that excludes young people, women and small enterprises is not one we can afford,” she said.
