The Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation between Ghana and Zambia has been revitalised, according to an announcement by President John Dramani Mahama.

In a Facebook post, the Ghanaian leader revealed that this renewal establishes a structured and results-orientated framework for collaboration in key sectors such as trade and investment, energy, tourism, mining, agriculture, education, science and technology, youth development, and defence cooperation.

The two countries have also signed ten Memorandums of Understanding to serve as a framework for their cooperation.

One of these MOUs facilitates visa-free travel for all categories of passport holders between Ghana and Zambia, which President Mahama considers a significant step towards realising the free movement of people on the African continent.

President Mahama is on a three-day state visit to Lusaka, Zambia, at the invitation of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama, and other officials, President Mahama engaged in bilateral talks with President Hichilema, focusing on strengthening diplomatic relations, enhancing trade and investment cooperation, and exploring opportunities within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

A highlight of the visit was President Mahama’s address to the National Assembly of Zambia, where he shared Ghana’s vision for a more integrated and prosperous Africa.

His delegation includes the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama; the Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to the President, Mrs Joyce Bawa Mogtari; the Legal Counsel to the President, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew; and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Stan Xoese Dogbe.

Others are the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP); the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu (MP); the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP); the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George (MP); and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey (MP).
