The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has refuted allegations of vote buying during the party’s February 7 primary.
The NDC is currently investigating the matter and has vowed to impose sanctions on those implicated.
Mr. Jamal, who was previously recalled as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria over the issue, maintained that he did not engage in any form of inducement towards delegates on the election day.
His denial comes after the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, issued a statement condemning the allegations and announcing a probe into the reported vote-buying claims.
“I wish to state categorically that I, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, have not engaged in any vote buying or election malpractices and I pledge to avail myself to assist the party in its investigation into the subject matter anytime,” he stated
Expressing gratitude to President Mahama for the opportunity to serve as High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jamal also thanked delegates in Ayawaso East for endorsing him to lead the party into the March 3, 2026, parliamentary by-election.
The allegations against him include reports that he distributed items such as 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates during the voting process, actions perceived by party insiders, delegates, and the public as attempts to influence voting patterns.
