President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, February 11, 2026, received the report of the Transition Committee on the transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) from the Ministry of Health to the University of Ghana.

He assured the Transitional Management Committee, co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson, a seasoned academic and former provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana, that it will be presented to Cabinet immediately for final input and implementation.

President Mahama thanked the Committee for the diligence with which they approached the task they were given, for completing it, and for presenting their report to him.

He noted that the hospital was built to create a world-class centre of research and learning for the University of Ghana.

“The University of Ghana Medical Centre is our highest quaternary medical facility in this country. Indeed, it’s of world-class standard, and we want to see it maintain that standard both in terms of clinical care and in terms of logistics and equipment.”

The President continued, “And so we want to find the best path in which we can maintain the hospital at the standard in which it is.”

The Transitional Management Committee, co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson, has recommended a 10-year transition to fully wean off government subventions with performance-based leadership contrast.
