The Minority Caucus in Parliament has formally requested President John Dramani Mahama to relieve Dr Randy Abbey of his duties as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), citing his unfitness for the position.
The Caucus stated that the CEO’s removal is warranted due to his inability to effectively manage the cocoa sector. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, expressed these views while addressing journalists in Accra on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
He described the current crisis in the cocoa sector as unfortunate and lamented the announced reduction in the producer price of cocoa, warning that it would have severe consequences for farmers and their families.
According to him, the 28.6 per cent reduction would adversely impact the livelihoods of over one million cocoa farmers nationwide.
“This places an unfair burden on our cocoa farmers, who are already struggling with rising costs. The minority will not remain silent on this matter, and we are prepared to support farmers should they decide to protest against the reduction in the producer price,” he said.
The press conference comes after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announced a new cocoa producer price of GH¢41,392 per tonne, or GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025–2026 crop season, effective Thursday, February 12.
