Ghana has ended bilateral talks with Togo over their maritime border dispute and will seek international arbitration under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
A statement issued by the presidency indicated that the decision was taken due to eight years of unsuccessful negotiations.
The disputed area is strategically valuable for potential oil and gas reserves and fishing rights.
The government of Ghana says the move aims to preserve peace amid rising tensions between state institutions operating in the offshore zone.
Technical teams from both nations have met repeatedly to find a middle ground.
However, despite what officials describe as “sustained engagement”, the two West African neighbours remain unable to reach a mutually agreed-upon line in the Atlantic.
”This is being done in the spirit of good neighbourliness,” the government noted, stressing that cooperation with Togo on other fronts remains strong.
