The Ghana Mahama inherited was as dark as the dark dresses the Minority side wore, but… Ayariga

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has lauded President John Mahama’s leadership, describing it as transformative.

He noted that the president assumed office during a period of severe crisis but successfully restored stability.

Hypocritical Bawumia must remain silent; he lacks the moral authority to complain about political intimidation

He made these remarks in response to the State of the Nation Address delivered by President John Dramani Mahama on February 27, 2026.

During his contribution on the floor of the House, Ayariga spoke of the stark contrast between the country the President inherited and the Ghana he now addresses.

“The Ghana you inherited is as dark as the dark dresses that they [minority side] are wearing on the other side. And the Ghana you speak of today is clearly as bright as the white dresses we [majority side] are wearing on this side,” he said.

In his view, the SONA presented by the president and the gains made were factual.

He asserted his colleague MP and minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, would attest to visible development projects, including road works under the “Big Push” programme in Winneba.

He also justified the reduction in cocoa prices, saying the circumstances made it necessary.

He cited international reports claiming that the Ivory Coast would pay cocoa farmers between 800 and 1,000 CFA per kilogramme for the mid-crop season starting March 1, compared to its main crop price of 2,800 CFA per kilogramme.

“The main price was 2,800 CFA per kg. When converted to Ghana cedis, this is about 9.80 to about 1,225 Ghana cedis per 64 kg bag. In Ghana, farmers are paid 2,587 per 64 kg bag, which is more than twice the price in Ivory Coast,” he said.

“Your sterling leadership, leadership that has been recognised by the entire West Africa, is why they unanimously elected you unopposed to lead in Africa. Ghanaians are proud of you,” he said.

The majority leader also touched on improved economic conditions, citing falling food prices and increased affordability of essentials like sugar and rice.

He expressed confidence that Muslims would pray for the president’s well-being during Ramadan, praising his leadership’s recognition in West Africa.
