Traders at the Kasoa Old Market are voicing strong opposition to the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly’s plan to demolish temporary stalls to make way for new, “livable” stores.
The Kasoa Petty Traders Association, which represents nearly 1,000 members, warns that the modernisation project could displace hundreds of local businesses.
The primary concern is that many current occupants will be priced out of the new development.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Association Secretary Appiah Roger emphasised the financial strain on the community: “We are protesting because the majority of the people over here who are selling and trading in Kasoa do not have that amount of money to pay for the rent of the store,” he said.
The association has labelled the demolition move as contradictory to the government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy, arguing that removing established traders undermines economic participation.
According to Roger, the traders are demanding that the demolition order be halted immediately while the assembly engages in extensive dialogue with the association before any further action is taken.
