The Executive Director of Salt & Light Ministries, a Christian para-church organisation dedicated to empowering Christians to reach their full potential, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reserve their safe seats for competent women who can represent them in Parliament.

Rev. Dr Joyce Rosalind Aryee expressed concern over the limited number of women currently serving in Parliament.

To address this, she proposed that political parties ensure they file more women as candidates in parliamentary elections. Specifically, she urged the two major political parties to allow more women to contest “safe seats”.

This suggestion, she noted, aligns with the affirmative action goals that have been championed in Ghana for years.

She was speaking to commemorate International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8.

The 2026 theme, ‘Give To Gain’, promotes a mindset of generosity and collaboration through the IWD campaign, emphasising the power of reciprocity and support.

She stressed that women possess exceptional talents and capabilities that, when harnessed, can significantly contribute to the nation’s transformation.

“Women are multifaceted, wise, and competent individuals who become more refined with access to higher education. Therefore, I urge women to pursue advanced learning and be courageous in their pursuits. They should also be confident in seeking public office. Moreover, we advise our male counterparts to offer support and encouragement rather than discouragement.”
