The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that emergency crews were required to dismantle a microlight aircraft following a fatal accident in Tema on Monday, March 16, 2026.
The extraction process was necessary to recover the remains of the two occupants trapped within the wreckage.
DOII Ebenezer Yenzu, the Public Relations Officer for the Tema Region, explained that the aircraft’s construction—utilising advanced alloys and composites—presented unique challenges.
He noted that such structures often contain pressurised lines and flammable materials, requiring specific tools and specialised techniques for a safe recovery operation.
Speaking on the programme Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, DOII Yenzu reported that the aircraft, identified by registration number 9GADV, was en route from Ho to Accra when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitness accounts provided to host Kwabena Agyapong, the craft descended to a dangerously low altitude before crashing into a local preschool.
The aircraft reportedly struck two classroom blocks, with the fuselage spanning both structures.
A tree on the property intercepted the craft, preventing it from moving further into the building before it exploded.
Despite the severity of the impact and the subsequent fire, DOII Yenzu confirmed that no pupils at the school were injured.
Regarding the recovery efforts, DOII Yenzu stated:
“It was an aircraft that had space for only two people. The two people on board died. To be able to recover their bodies, we had to dismantle the aircraft. After that, we handed over the bodies to the police for preservation.”
The GNFS was supported in the operation by the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service. While the recovery is complete, the identities of the two deceased individuals have not yet been established.
