NAACP and CBC Back Landmark UN Resolution Declaring Enslavement a “Crime Against Humanity”

As part of efforts to push for global restorative justice, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and the NAACP have formally endorsed a proposed United Nations resolution that would classify the Transatlantic Slave Trade and racialised chattel enslavement as the “gravest crime against humanity”.

The resolution, spearheaded by the Republic of Ghana, is set to be introduced during the March 2026 convening of the UN General Assembly.

The timing coincides with the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Transatlantic Trafficking of Africans.

In a letter addressed to Ghanaian officials, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson argued that the measure is a “long-overdue step” toward repairing the enduring harms of enslavement.

Mr Johnson emphasised that the push for reparations extends beyond financial compensation, focusing instead on “comprehensive repair”, including closing the racial wealth gap and strengthening educational access.

“Any government that has played a role in creating and maintaining inequity also bears responsibility for remedying it,” Johnson wrote, framing the resolution as a commitment to the rule of law and international human rights.

The CBC expressed its view in a separate announcement, hailing the African Union’s recent designation of 2026–2035 as a decade dedicated to reparations.

The Caucus called on UN Member States to “choose courage over convenience” by adopting the resolution to address the structural legacies of colonialism and apartheid.
