Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe Constituency and Second Deputy Minority Whip, has reiterated the urgent need for Ghanaians to undergo a profound shift in mindset to transcend the lingering impacts of slavery and drive national progress.
Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Shaib commended former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo’s initiative on reparations and former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership in pushing for a UN resolution.
He highlighted the devastating effects of slavery, including racism, economic inequality, and global injustice, emphasising that these historical injustices continue to shape Ghana’s present.
Hon. Shaib lamented Ghana’s reliance on loans and the export of raw materials without value addition, saying it’s a form of “real slavery” that perpetuates economic inequality and limits opportunities for Ghanaians.
He urged Ghanaians to focus on adding value to resources like cocoa and gold, promoting economic empowerment and industrialisation.
The MP stressed that changing the narrative requires a break from colonial-era mentalities and a renewed focus on harnessing Ghana’s resources and talents.
He called on fellow parliamentarians to champion initiatives promoting economic empowerment, industrialisation, and cultural pride, saying it’s time to “believe that it starts with us” and work towards a prosperous Ghana.
Hon. Shaib’s impassioned plea underscores the need for collective action and mindset change to drive Ghana’s progress. As the country navigates its development path, his words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of self-reliance, innovation, and value addition in unlocking Ghana’s true potential.
