Ghana’s Sports Ministry denies sponsoring business Class travel for fans

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has officially debunked viral social media claims suggesting that the sector minister sponsored several individuals with business class tickets for a trip to Germany.

The controversy arose after a video circulated online showing the minister interacting with travellers at an airport, leading to allegations that public funds or corporate sponsorships were used to fly a private delegation to watch the Black Stars’ upcoming friendly matches.

In a formal clarification issued on March 29, 2026, the ministry labelled the claims as “false and without any basis”, explaining that the encounter was merely a chance meeting.

“The individuals captured in the video are not known to the minister,” the statement signed by Bagbara Tanko, Head of PR & Communications, read. “They were simply Ghanaians he encountered briefly in the departure tunnel at the airport while boarding his flight.”

The ministry further clarified that the minister is travelling alone on an official assignment to engage with the Black Stars’ technical staff.

According to the release, no Ministry staff or external delegation accompanied him, and no person received a sponsored upgrade or ticket.

Addressing concerns regarding the financing of the trip, the ministry maintained that it has not committed any portion of its budget or sought corporate support for fan travel.

“No individual was sponsored, facilitated, or upgraded by the Minister or the Ministry… no arrangements or support have been made for fan participation or travel in any form,” the statement added.

It has, therefore, urged the public to disregard the “misleading narratives”, citing a continued commitment to the prudent use of public resources.
