The Ghana Police Service has apprehended two individuals, Bernard Mensah (41) and Michael Ebo Sarfo, for creating and disseminating AI-generated deepfake videos targeting President John Dramani Mahama and his wife, Mrs. Lordina Mahama.
The suspects were arrested on March 28, 2026, pursuant to intelligence-led operations and digital forensic analysis.
The deepfake content, circulated on Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, aimed to deceive and defraud the public.
Mensah, who operates under the alias ‘Charity,’ managed a Facebook account disseminating the fake content, while Sarfo impersonated the former President on social media platforms.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, cautioned that creating or sharing deepfake content constitutes a criminal offense in Ghana, and the police will prosecute offenders.
The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
