President John Dramani Mahama has convened an emergency cabinet meeting to address the sharp spike in fuel prices triggered by the ongoing conflict in Iran and the broader Middle East.
The President explained that the session is intended to explore practical interventions to cushion Ghanaians against the impact of rising costs at the pumps.
He made the announcement on Saturday, 4 April 2026, while delivering the keynote address on the second day of the Kwahu Business Forum.
During his address, the President highlighted the government’s intention to review the current price structure to find areas for temporary reduction.
“I have called for this emergency cabinet meeting to decide on specific measures we can take to cushion petroleum prices while we hope the conflict comes to an end. There are adjustments we can make, particularly in the margins, to help maintain relatively stable prices as we pray for the war to cease.”
He further reassured the public of the administration’s dedication to social welfare:
“The government remains fully committed to easing the burden on citizens. The cabinet will examine various aspects of the fuel price build-up and consider interventions to provide relief.”
Addressing concerns regarding national stability, President Mahama asserted that the government has implemented robust measures to build an economy capable of withstanding external shocks.
“I can confidently tell you that the economy will not collapse because of the war in Iran,” he stated, emphasizing that the current fiscal framework is designed to endure such global volatility.
The President also extended his appreciation to transport unions for their restraint during this period of uncertainty. He noted that his administration remains focused on stabilising prices and supporting the public through these immediate challenges.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the transport unions for their patience and understanding. We did not anticipate this situation, but they have held off on increasing fares. I am confident they will continue to exercise restraint as we work together to improve the situation,” he said.
