GhIE petitions Auditor-General over GH¢110bn ‘Big push’ road projects

April 8, 2026

The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has formally requested an independent audit of the government’s GH¢110 billion ‘Big Push’ road infrastructure initiative, citing concerns over procurement practices and project delivery.

GhIE has petitioned the Auditor-General to conduct a comprehensive technical review of the projects, emphasizing that the substantial investment warrants rigorous scrutiny.

This request follows investigative reports by The Fourth Estate alleging irregularities, including single-source procurement and restricted tendering, in the Ministry of Roads and Highways’ contract awards, which raised concerns about transparency, value for money, and adherence to procurement laws.

GhIE stressed that with approximately GH¢85 billion already committed to ongoing projects, an independent audit is essential to safeguard national interests and restore public confidence. Referencing Section 16 of the Audit Service Act, 2000 (Act 584), the Institution underscored the Auditor-General’s authority to undertake special audits in the public interest.

The Institute added that the audit should encompass the entire project lifecycle, including feasibility studies and compliance, to ensure transparency, fairness, and efficient use of public resources.

GhIE reiterated its commitment to supporting the Auditor-General with technical expertise and urged prompt action to guarantee transparency, accountability, and value for money in the execution of the country’s flagship road projects.
