Bagbin Vows to Pass Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, Predicts Mahama Will Assent

April 11, 2026
Bagbin-Speaker-of-Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, expressing confidence that former President Mahama will assent to it.

According to Alban Bagbin, the bill reflects the values and concerns of many Ghanaians and traditional authorities, as it was driven by public input.

He emphasised that the House remains dedicated to enacting legislation that represents the will of the people, noting that the current composition of the House positions it well to see the bill through.

Alban Bagbin made these remarks at the Kasoa Traditional Leaders and Stakeholders Forum, urging Ghanaians to disregard rumours suggesting the bill is not a priority.

He reiterated his reputation as a man of action.

“Be sure, I am there; the law will be passed. The law has been processed because of the conversion of Parliament when the former president declined to assent to it. When that Parliament ended, it ended with that bill in the hands of the former Parliament.

“You agree with me that this parliament is not the same as the last parliament. It is very different, 137-137, and also 20 women NPP and 20 women NDC. This Parliament is 189 as against 87,” he said.

He stressed that the bill will be passed when Parliament reconvenes.

The Speaker added that the previous government was punished for the failure of former President Akufo-Addo in assenting to the bill.

He noted the foreign influences that are pushing to have the bill. Not passed cannot dictate to Ghana over this matter, adding that these countries are struggling and facing the consequences of their decision to allow LGBTQI activities to thrive in their countries.

He said our cultures and values are different from these foreigners.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill seeks to regulate issues relating to sexual orientation and family values and has generated widespread public discourse, drawing both strong support and criticism from various sections of society.
