The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has acknowledged that persistent financial constraints have restricted the government’s capacity to recruit additional teachers, notwithstanding the escalating demand within schools nationwide.
This clarification follows public scrutiny regarding the government’s recent decision to employ 7,000 new educators, a figure that critics have dismissed as woefully inadequate given the current educational needs.
Addressing these concerns during the launch and communications briefing of the 19th eLearning Africa Conference on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, the Minister explained that fiscal realities dictate the scale of current hiring efforts.
He emphasised that while the government recognises the necessity for a larger workforce, it must operate within the limits of its allocated budget.
“If resources were available, we should be employing and recruiting up to 50,000 teachers across the country, but due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to do that.
The Ministry of Education sought clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit up to 7,000 teachers with degrees and diplomas. Accordingly, the process has been advertised in an open, transparent manner,” he said.
Minister Iddrisu further maintained that the recruitment exercise is being conducted with strict adherence to established procedures to ensure fairness and transparency for all qualified applicants.
In addition to addressing staffing challenges, he announced that the government is set to roll out a comprehensive digital education policy designed to bridge systemic gaps and enhance learning outcomes across the country.
