Ghana and EU formalise Strategic Security and Defence partnership to improve regional stability

April 14, 2026
ABLAKWA

Ghana has officially formalised a Security and Defence Partnership with the European Union, primarily aimed at bolstering cooperation to tackle emerging security threats and enhance both national and regional stability.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, 14 April, the agreement establishes a structured framework for collaboration across several critical sectors, including counter-terrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, cybersecurity, and border management, alongside support for peacekeeping and crisis response operations.

The Ministry noted that the partnership will facilitate essential technical assistance, specialised training, and the provision of equipment to support the operational capacity of Ghana’s security agencies.

This agreement builds upon years of longstanding cooperation between Ghana and the EU, evolving existing engagements into a more coordinated and forward-looking strategic framework.

Crucially, the Ministry addressed and disputed public concerns and misinformation regarding the nature of the deal.

It clarified that the agreement does not permit the establishment of foreign military bases or the stationing of foreign troops on Ghanaian soil.

The statement emphasised that Ghana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain fully protected under this arrangement, asserting that the cooperation is rooted in mutual respect and remains strictly aligned with the nation’s security priorities.

Additionally, the Ministry reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to its enduring foreign policy principles, including non-alignment, Pan-Africanism, good neighbourliness, and peaceful coexistence.

It stated unequivocally that Ghana would not enter into any agreement that undermines the sovereignty or territorial integrity of neighbouring states, while maintaining its steadfast commitment to transparency and accountability in all international engagements.

In dismissing circulating claims as inaccurate, the Ministry assured the public that this partnership serves the national interest and reinforces Ghana’s broader commitment to global peace, stability, and international cooperation.
