A technical failure at the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) processing plant has forced an emergency shutdown, leading to a sharp reduction in gas supply to thermal power plants and subsequent electricity disruptions across several parts of the country.
In a joint statement released Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and Ghana Gas confirmed that the facility suffered a “complete failure” of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller within the Heat Medium System (HMS).
This critical component is essential for regulating temperatures during gas processing; its malfunction has rendered the affected system unusable.
Preliminary engineering assessments indicate that the hardware is beyond immediate repair and requires a full replacement.
Consequently, the plant was taken offline as a safety precaution, immediately curtailing the fuel supply required by thermal plants to generate electricity for the national grid.
Engineers are currently working on-site in a 24-hour rotation to install the replacement system and restore operations. While a comprehensive safety risk assessment is still underway to ensure a secure restart, officials expressed optimism that recovery processes could begin as early as today.
Both GRIDCo and Ghana Gas have issued an apology for the unplanned outages, asking for public patience while technical teams expedite the restoration of the country’s power supply. Additional updates are expected as the situation at the processing plant evolves.
