The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has issued a firm assurance that the long-awaited Boankra Inland Port project will be fully operational before the conclusion of the party’s next four-year term.

Addressing a gathering of traditional leaders and residents within the Ejisu Municipality, Mr Asiedu Nketiah framed the completion of this strategic infrastructure as a cornerstone of his legacy and a primary objective for his tenure as National Chairman.

He emphasised that the port serves as a vital engine for economic transformation, designed to significantly boost regional trade, generate sustainable employment, and alleviate the perennial congestion currently hampering operations at Ghana’s primary seaports.

The project itself carries a complex history, having been originally conceived during the administration of John Agyekum Kufuor. Initial work commenced in late 2007 but stalled shortly thereafter in 2008 due to various logistical and political shifts.

After years of dormancy, the project saw a formal revival on November 5, 2020, when President Nana Akufo-Addo performed a ceremonial sod-cutting.

However, physical construction by the current contractor, Justmoh Construction Limited, did not begin in earnest until October 10, 2022.

Valued at approximately US$330 million, the inland port occupies a sprawling 413-acre site in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The first phase of development is focused on the essential infrastructure required for immediate operations, including advanced storage facilities, a dedicated security zone, internal road networks, and a central terminal.

This facility is expected to transform the Ashanti Region into a major logistics hub, bridging the gap between the coastal ports and the northern sectors of the country.

During the engagement, the Otumfuo Nkwasuohene, Nana Osei Fosu Adutwum, expressed his appreciation for the broader vision regarding regional development.

He specifically commended the strategic integration of the Boankra project with the ongoing Accra-Kumasi motorway, noting that the synergy between high-speed road networks and the inland port would fundamentally enhance economic activity and ease of transport across the region.
