Chief of Staff Broks Peace as Apostle Nyamekye Forgives Free Zones CEO Over Galamsey Remarks

April 26, 2026
Debrah

In a move to repair relations between the government and the clergy, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has issued a formal apology to the Church of Pentecost regarding controversial remarks made by Dr Mary Awusi, Chief Executive of the Ghana Free Zones Authority.

The tension arose after Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church, raised alarms during a General Council Meeting about the devastating impact of illegal mining, or galamsey.

He noted that the pollution of natural water bodies has become so severe that many congregations are now forced to use artificial pools for traditional baptismal rites instead of rivers and streams.

In response to these environmental concerns, Dr Awusi had issued a public warning to the clergyman, suggesting he would be “dealt with” if he persisted with such statements. This sparked immediate public backlash, culminating in a reconciliation effort during Mr Debrah’s birthday celebration at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) in Trasacco on Sunday, 26 April.

Addressing the congregation, the Chief of Staff described the outburst as an unintentional error and appealed for the church’s grace.

“God continue to bless you. But the chairman of our church, you know, myself, Elder Ofosu Ampofo, our Local Government Minister and several others, are members of your church. A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr. Mavis Awusi, slipped a bit against you. I want on this occasion to commemorate my birthday, to let the whole church forgive us. It was just a slip. It wasn’t intentionally done to malign our church. I believe sincerely that you forgive her and forgive us and accept us as your children. God richly bless all of you,” Mr Debrah stated.

Apostle Nyamekye accepted the apology with a sense of levity and poise, noting that he held no personal animosity towards the CEO. He remarked that the controversy had unintentionally amplified his message and the visibility of the church.

“This lady has actually made me more popular. I don’t think much about people like that because, in a way, she has brought more attention to our church and to myself,” the Apostle shared while addressing the church. “If I had anything against her and had been given the opportunity to speak for about 45 minutes, I would have addressed it directly. However, I believe we all have different opinions on issues, and it is important that we come together despite those differences. I have therefore forgiven her. So don’t worry, I want your heart to be at rest.”
