It is not in my place to call for the removal of Dominic Ayine as Attorney-General – Baidoo Jnr

Stephen Baidoo Jr, the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin South constituency, has declined to take a definitive stance on calls for the removal of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, over allegations of underperformance.

Mirroring the biblical account of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, who prayed for his cup of suffering to pass over him, the former aspirant refused to either endorse or oppose the suggestions for dismissal.

When questioned on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM regarding claims that the Attorney-General’s performance has been abysmal, Mr Baidoo remained non-committal.

In his response, he acknowledged the immense difficulty of the role, noting that occupying such a high-profile position is no easy feat.

He argued that critics often judge appointees without fully understanding the unique challenges they face, leading to assessments that can be overly harsh.

He further maintained that President John Dramani Mahama understood the specific reasons for the appointment, and, until the President indicates otherwise, he is not in a position to demand Dr Ayine’s removal.

Addressing the matter directly, Mr Baidoo said: “Let this cup pass me by, please. There is no job that is easy to do. When someone is performing and you watch from afar, you don’t know all the challenges they may be facing, and so I think that the president has confidence in him, and that is why he chose him. His removal is for the president to decide. But so long as he remains our attorney-general, we will support him, we will encourage him, and we will continue to pray for God to grant him the wisdom so he will do his best. So for now, I am not in the position to support or not to support.”

Stephen Baidoo Jr concluded by stressing that as long as the Attorney-General remains in office, he deserves the necessary support to succeed and to ensure he executes his duties effectively.
