NPP Would Have Imposed New Taxes to Manage Energy Crisis, but NDC Has What It Takes to Resolve It

Stephen Baidoo Jnr, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Assin South, has urged Ghanaians to maintain faith in the government as it addresses the nation’s current energy situation.

During an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he assured the public that the administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama, is committed to resolving the ongoing challenges within the shortest possible timeframe.

Mr Baidoo Jnr suggested that Ghanaians should find solace in the fact that this crisis is occurring under an NDC government, asserting that the party possesses the unique capacity required to manage such a situation effectively.

He highlighted that President Mahama has already demonstrated significant competence in the energy sector, specifically citing his first-term success in resolving a deep-seated energy crisis that had troubled the nation for years prior to his assumption of office.

According to the candidate, the current difficulties are primarily the result of obsolete transformers and ageing machinery—issues the government has acknowledged and is actively working to rectify.

Addressing the host, he remarked: “Ghanaians should trust the NDC. If the NPP were to be in power, they would have used the occasion to introduce new fuel levies and other taxes. I don’t want to sound in a way where people will accuse me of politicising the issue. However, the point to note is that, trust the NDC to resolve this.”

Mr Baidoo Jnr further defended the leadership within the sector, describing Energy Minister John Jinapor as a competent professional who fully understands the complexities of his role.

He appealed for public patience while the government rolls out its strategic measures, admitting that while the recent power outages are undeniably affecting livelihoods, the disruptions will be short-lived.

“Sacrifices have to be made. Trust us that we are not sleeping on the job. We are working to ensure that whatever needs to be restructured is done.”

In addition to technical fixes, he advised the government to remain vigilant regarding human factors that may contribute to these challenges.

He commended recent leadership changes at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), particularly in Kumasi, and expressed approval of the Energy Minister’s decision to have the GRIDCo boss step aside following the fire incident at the Akosombo Power Station.

“I would also say to the NDC the human factor is also key to these challenges and we have to be bold enough to make these changes to make sure that people who are aligned to our ideologies and the nation are appointed to hold positions.”

He added by noting that politics in Ghana often mirrors the devotion of religion, warning that some individuals may go to great lengths to sabotage national stability simply to satisfy a partisan political agenda.
