Mahama Inspects Tidal Wave Impact; Pledges World Bank-Funded Sea Defence for Fuveme

President John Dramani Mahama has visited Fuveme in the Volta Region to inspect communities affected by recent tidal waves and engage residents on both immediate relief and long-term coastal protection measures.

He noted that the area falls under the World Bank-supported West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme (WACA), a $150 million initiative aimed at addressing coastal erosion and tidal wave impacts across vulnerable communities.

The President assured residents that the project, currently at the design stage, will soon move into implementation, including the construction of sea defence systems, groynes, and ecosystem restoration measures, such as coconut tree and mangrove planting.

In the interim, the government is exploring immediate interventions, including dredging of the estuary to reduce pressure and mitigate further damage.

“I am happy to announce that the feasibility studies have been finished. They are at the design stage, and after the design stage, they will do the procurement—that is the actual construction of the WACA project,” he said.

He added that “we tried to repurpose some of the World Bank projects, but as the minister said, we protected the $150 million that is meant for the WACA project. So your money is safe, and the project will go on.”
