If the government invests more in our local leagues, we will harvest more – Fmr Sports Minister

Former Sports Minister Isaac Kwame Asiamah has called on the government to urgently prioritise investment in Ghana’s local football leagues for it to produce talents for the national teams.

In an exclusive interview on Rainbow Radio, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah argued that a strong and vibrant league is the backbone of any successful football nation, and without proper infrastructure, clubs struggle to develop talent, attract sponsorship, and compete at higher levels.

Hon. Asiaman further emphasised that investing in infrastructure would not only improve the quality of play but also create jobs, boost local economies, and restore pride in the domestic league.

“During my time as a minister, I started an initiative on sports infrastructure because when you visit where some of the local teams train or play matches, it’s an eyesore – no proper security arrangements. So if I had finished all the multi-purpose stadia, it would have helped a lot. Football is a whole package; if we don’t invest, we can’t harvest.”

“The government needs to invest in our local leagues and infrastructure so that the league can produce talents to feed the national teams.” – he added

Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah urged policymakers to see sports as a long-term investment rather than an expense.
