Doctors accused of discrediting Korle-Bu test results to secure private commissions

The Chairman of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers Union (MELPWU) at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr John Kofi Nakoda, has launched a robust defence of public diagnostic services following allegations that laboratory results from the facility are unreliable.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem on RainbowRadio87.5FM, Mr Nakoda addressed recent comments made by a medical practitioner on traditional media, which suggested that tests conducted within Korle Bu’s laboratories are “fake”.

The union leader categorially denied these assertions, describing them as both misleading and a significant threat to public confidence in state-run healthcare institutions.

Mr Nakoda maintained that the diagnostic work performed by laboratory staff remains professional, accurate, and fundamental to the successful treatment of patients.

He argued that the motive behind such damaging rhetoric is often financial rather than clinical.

According to the union chairman, certain doctors who own or are affiliated with private medical facilities deliberately cast doubt on public sector results to divert patients toward their own clinics.

This practice, he claimed, is a calculated tactic to secure commissions and increase private revenue at the expense of the state’s premier teaching hospital.

Beyond the immediate financial impact on Korle Bu’s internal revenue, Mr Nakoda expressed deep concern over the long-term erosion of trust in public health infrastructure.

He warned that the union will not remain silent while the integrity of its members is questioned for personal gain.

According to him, MELPWU intends to petition the relevant stakeholders and regulatory authorities to demand a formal investigation.

Mr Nakoda concluded by stressing that addressing these unfounded allegations is essential to protecting the reputation of the laboratory profession and ensuring that patients are not exploited through fear.
