Zongo Communities remain a pillar of support for NDC, declares Ismaila Ali

Ismaila Ali Horoya, the Greater Accra Regional Zongo Caucus Coordinator and aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Caucus Coordinator role, has highlighted the enduring loyalty of Zongo communities toward the party.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he asserted that voters within these enclaves have consistently supported the NDC across every election cycle, describing their electoral contribution as commendable.

He noted that the Zongo communities represent one of the fundamental roots of the party, acknowledging that the NDC has maintained a strong presence in these areas since 1992.

While he admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) made a noticeable impact within these communities during the 2016 general elections, he argued that they have struggled to make any significant or sustained gains beyond that specific period.

Clarifying the demographic nature of these areas, Horoya explained to host Kwabena Agyapong that Zongos are not exclusively inhabited by Muslims, but are home to diverse individuals, including Christians.

He defined a Zongo as any area primarily inhabited by settlers, though he acknowledged that the majority of residents are indeed Muslim.

He explained that the party established the Zongo Caucus specifically to ensure proper representation and to implement targeted initiatives designed to bring relief to the people.

When questioned on whether the NDC has fulfilled its campaign pledges to these areas, Horoya maintained that the party has delivered on several promises and remains dedicated to fulfilling its outstanding commitments.

He emphasised that a party in power has a duty to deliver on its word, rather than merely soliciting votes and ignoring the electorate once in office.

In a move to foster inclusivity, he proposed that deputies to the party’s Zongo Coordinators should be Christians to ensure a religious balance.

He posited that this represents a strategic political approach to effectively engage all residents within the Zongo communities.

Stressing that the Zongo Caucus has successfully built trust within these areas, he concluded by stating: “The Zongo Caucus has helped the party and, as a party, we have a responsibility in appreciating their support. We have to continue shaping and transforming our Zongo communities.”
