NHIA Suspends Three Pharmacies Over Suspected Fraudulent Claims

May 14, 2026
NHIA

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the immediate temporary suspension of three pharmacies for their alleged involvement in fraudulent activities.

This decisive action follows a routine claims verification exercise which uncovered material irregularities in the service transactions and claims submitted by the affected facilities.

The suspended entities include Deldem Pharma Limited in Weija, Paramedica Pharmacy in Ablekuma, and Desh Chemist, located along the Odumase High Street in Amasaman.

According to an official public notice issued on 14 May 2026, these irregularities have raised a reasonable suspicion of fraud and abuse, constituting a breach of the NHIS Provider Service Agreement.

Under the terms of the suspension, these pharmacies are strictly prohibited from dispensing medicines or providing any services to NHIS members.

While the investigation continues, the Authority has advised NHIS cardholders who require pharmaceutical services to visit other credentialed providers across the country to ensure their healthcare needs remain met.

In a stern warning to all credentialed healthcare providers, the NHIA emphasised that it will not tolerate practices that threaten the sustainability of the scheme.

The Authority noted that such abusive actions ultimately deprive members of the quality healthcare services they deserve.

The Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, underscored the legal consequences for those found guilty of undermining the system.

The Authority reminded stakeholders that any provider who “defrauds or attempts to defraud the Scheme commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine or a term of imprisonment of not more than ten (10) years or both”.

This move forms part of a broader commitment by the NHIA to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public funds. Dr Bampoe reaffirmed that the Authority remains dedicated to the “prudent use of public funds in delivering accessible and quality healthcare to all residents of Ghana”.
