Reports on fire outbreaks are confidential, not for public consumption – GNFS

Alex King Nartey, a representative of the Public Relations Department for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has clarified that formal reports regarding fire outbreaks are strictly confidential and are not intended for general public consumption.

While these documents are classified, Mr. Nartey noted that individuals whose properties have been affected by fire are permitted to apply to the Service for personal copies.

Similarly, for incidents involving public infrastructure or marketplaces, the GNFS provides reports directly to local assemblies and other relevant government agencies.

Speaking on the program Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he explained that beyond record-keeping, these reports serve as vital data for internal strategy.

The findings help the Service refine public education efforts and craft targeted safety campaigns designed to prevent future disasters.

“Fire outbreak reports are not meant for the public. The reports are confidential information. If, for example, your house is razed down by fire, you would have to apply for a copy of the report. In terms of markets and public places, the assemblies would have to apply for copies.

Aside from that, the GNFS uses these reports to design study materials which we use for media campaigns, public awareness initiatives, and other activities aimed at reducing fire outbreaks.

Based on all these findings, we develop initiatives to educate Ghanaians. So, we cannot make these reports public. But the reports shape our work and how we engage with the public.”
